The Gracie Difference
Building a Strong Foundation for a Lifelong Journey
Increased Awareness: We teach your child to know the difference between “joking” and “bullying” so they know when and how to act in each situation.
Unshakeable Confidence: A confident child is a Bullyproof child. Bullies seek “easy targets” – those who will not stand up to their abuse. We arm your child with the tools they need to overcome physical, verbal, and psychological harassment.
Total Responsibility: We prepare your child to deal with bullies without turning them into one. We emphasize discipline, responsibility, and respect throughout our kids martial arts program. We teach the 5 “Rules of Engagement” to make sure they never abuse their power.
One of the most pervasive and damaging forms of bullying is verbal harassment. Gracie Bullyproof is the kids' jiu-jitsu program that makes “Verbal Jiu-Jitsu,” part of its regular curriculum.
We’ve devised a series of role-playing exercises to teach kids how to identify and manage the common scenarios associated with verbal harassment and bullying.
Gracie Bullyproof students are taught how to speak assertively when necessary, but they also learn how to use direct eye contact and confident posture to deter bullies from targeting them.
All the self-defense techniques are presented in the form of “jiu-jitsu” games so that kids are highly excited about learning them.
When a child makes a mistake, we don’t focus on the error. Instead, we emphasize what a child did correctly. Through positive reinforcement, we help the kids reach their full potential without jeopardizing their love for the art.
Frequently Asked Questions
Most frequent questions and answers about our Children's Martial Arts Program.
Through our work, we have seen that confident kids make kinder kids. We teach children
how to not only stand up to bullies for themselves, but how to stand up for others. Our
Rules of Engagement teach children to avoid the fight if at all possible by first using
their words, and then telling an adult.
When they do need to resort to physical self-defense, we do not teach children punches
or kicks in the Gracie Bullyproof program, but rather, empowered by Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu,
to neutralize, defend, control, and negotiate if possible.
Upon arriving for your child's first jiu-jitsu class, we will provide a uniform, called a gi,
for them to wear. We recommend showing up in comfortable undergarments or leggings, and a t-shirt or
rashguard to wear under their gi.
Someone will be there to help you tie your child's belt for the first time!
Yes! One of the great things about martial arts classes is that it's an individual sport done in
a group environment. We find all our students improve in their focus, self control, discipline
and social skills. But the best part is… they don't even realize that is what our highly trained
kids martial arts instructors are actually doing. They just think they are having fun!
The best way to find out for yourself is to take advantage of our limited time offer. You'll find
our team so helpful and dedicated to helping your child become the best version of themselves. If
you are concerned about group classes for your child, we also offer private classes until they
feel ready to take on the group class setting!
Many parents ask, what's the difference between Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Karate classes? While we
believe all martial-arts have value, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has not only been proven to be the
most effective martial art for a smaller person to defend themselves in a real fight for nearly
a century, it also can be the most gentle.
We don't want our students turning into bullies themselves, and we also believe
self-defense should be scalable, depending on the situation. Whereas kids Karate lessons or
Taekwondo classes rely solely on landing punches and kicks, jiu-jitsu for kids focuses on
neutralizing a threat with verbal boundaries, distance management, body control, and
eventual negotiation.
We encourage parents to watch their children in their kids martial arts lessons. We love parents getting involved! Even better… you can join in our martial arts classes for adults, and have yet another thing in common with your little one. We love seeing the bond of families who train together!
We believe jiu-jitsu is for children of all skill levels and abilities. Your child belongs here.
Through our kids martial arts classes, we have seen our students improve coordination, balance,
motor skills, focus, and discipline. Plus, they make lots of great friends!
Our instructors are highly skilled in teaching martial arts to kids. It's their PASSION!
Headlock Escape 2 - Side Mount
Headlocks are one of the most common attacks in street fights. If you can anticipate the headlock before it happens, chances are you will be able to use Headlock Escape 1, the Frame Escape, to neutralize the threat. If you are caught by surprise, and don’t have enough time to use the first option, you can resort to the option number two - the Leg Hook Escape. In this lesson, you will learn the Standard Leg Hook escape along with two variations that you might need if the opponent resists.

Clinch (Conservative Opponent)
The goal in a fight is to avoid getting knocked out, establish the clinch, and get the fight to the ground where we can neutralize the opponent with greater efficiency. The easiest time to do this is when your opponent commits to attacking you aggressively. For this reason, it is best to keep the distance and wait for their attack if at all possible. In the event that your opponent approaches you conservatively during the fight, and you would like to close the distance, you can use the “surprise entry” method to establish the clinch.

Shrimp Escape - Side Mount
Against a much larger opponent, there is a good chance that you will find yourself on the bottom of the fight. If this happens, the safest thing to do is to get your opponent in your guard, because from there, you can neutralize punches and win the fight. If your opponent is able to get past your guard, you will need to use the Shrimp Escape to put them back where they belong. In this lesson you will learn three variations of the Shrimp Escape, starting with the Block and Shoot Variation.

Body Fold Takedown
Instead of exchanging punches with a larger opponent, we recommend that you establish the clinch and take them to the ground where you can exhaust and submit them. Once you establish the clinch, there is a good chance that they will get desperate and try to hit you in the face. In doing so, they will lean back and unknowingly create the perfect opportunity for the Body Fold Takedown.

Sometimes the difference between life and death relies on a person's ability to avoid being abducted or moved into isolation. In this lesson, we teach you the critical concept of "base" as well as how to avoid being pushed or pulled against your will. Being trapped beneath someone is a nightmarish experience potentially leading to panic, suffocation, exhaustion, and eventual submission. In this lesson, we teach you a highly effective technique called the Trap and Roll Escape, broken down into five different variations based on how the attacker is controlling you.

Kimura Armlock - Guard
The Kimura shoulder lock was named after the Japanese Jiu-Jitsu champion, Masahiko Kimura, after he used the technique against Helio Gracie in 1951. Although this technique can be applied from several different positions, we have chosen to teach it to you from the bottom of the guard, since that is where you are most likely to end up against a larger opponent. In the first slice you will learn the Basic Application, then we’ll discuss two reliable variations that can be applied from the guard.

Leg Hook Takedown
Your goal in any one-on-one physical altercation should be avoid dangerous punches while standing, and then get the fight to the ground where you can more effectively control and defeat your opponent. The safest place to be in a fight, while standing, is in a clinch. From the clinch, your opponent’s striking power is almost entirely eliminated. You will learn how to close the distance and establish the clinch in a future lesson. In this lesson, we will teach you how to take the opponent down once you get there.
