Martial Arts Classes in Richmond, VA
Find a practical, welcoming place to build confidence, learn useful skills, and enjoy training at your own pace.

A place to begin
Training that gives every student a real starting point.
Choosing a martial arts class is personal. You may be looking for a positive activity for your child, a practical way to feel safer, a new challenge after work, or a structured place to train with people who care about learning. Bushin Martial Arts brings Jiu-Jitsu, self-defense, and striking together in one Richmond school, with programs that meet students where they are.
You do not need to arrive already fit, flexible, confident, or familiar with martial arts. Bushin’s beginner programs are built around clear instruction, careful practice, and steady progress. Instructors break down each skill, give students time to ask questions, and create a room where training partners can support one another.
The result is a more useful first experience. Instead of trying to prove yourself on day one, you can focus on learning, moving, and seeing which class fits your life. Whether you are enrolling a child, trying something new as an adult, or looking for a women’s self-defense class, Bushin makes the first step straightforward.
Practical instruction
Classes focus on skills students can understand and practice, with patient coaching rather than intimidation or showmanship.
Room to grow
Programs give beginners a clear path forward, while experienced students can continue developing their technique and confidence.
A welcoming community
Students train in an ego-free environment where respect, safety, and encouragement are part of the work.
Choose your starting point
Programs for kids, women, teens, and adults.
Bushin does not treat every student as though they need the same class. A five-year-old learning focus and confidence needs a different experience than an adult beginning Jiu-Jitsu or a woman seeking practical self-defense. Each program has its own pace, curriculum, and class community, while sharing the same careful instruction and respectful approach.
Children can build body awareness, confidence, and social skills in an age-appropriate setting. Women can learn awareness, boundaries, and physical responses in a supportive group. Teens and adults can begin with foundational Jiu-Jitsu or striking, then decide how far they want to take their training.
If you are unsure which class is best, the free first week gives you a chance to experience Bushin before making a longer-term decision. You can meet the instructors, see the class rhythm, and ask practical questions about the next step.

For children
Help kids build confidence with care and structure.
Bullyproof is Bushin’s program for children ages 5 to 13. Students learn awareness, assertive communication, nonviolent self-defense, focus, and respect through Jiu-Jitsu games, role-playing, and positive reinforcement. Separate classes for ages 5 to 7 and 8 to 13 give children an environment that fits their stage of development.
For parents, the value is not just activity after school. Children practice listening, taking turns, trying again, and using their voice. The physical curriculum emphasizes control and responsibility, so students learn that confidence includes knowing when to seek help, speak up, and treat others well.
Bullyproof meets Tuesday and Thursday. Monthly membership is $100/month, and a free first week lets your family see how the program feels before joining.

For women
Learn practical self-defense in a supportive group.
WE Rise welcomes women ages 12 and up for practical self-defense training. The program combines awareness, boundary-setting, and Jiu-Jitsu-based responses to common attack patterns. It is designed for students who want useful skills and a patient place to practice them, whether martial arts are brand new or not.
Each class gives students time to learn, repeat movements, and ask questions. That matters when you are building familiarity with boundaries, physical responses, and the choices available in a stressful situation. You do not need a partner who already trains or a background in combat sports to start.
WE Rise meets Monday and Wednesday from 5:30 to 6:20 pm. Membership is $125/month per month after your free first week.

For teens and adults
Build real skills, one class at a time.
Jiu-Jitsu Foundations is the starting point for adults and teens ages 13 and up. Students learn 36 core techniques through a rotating series of lessons, so you can join without needing to know what came before. Your first classes focus on learning the movements and understanding the material, not competitive sparring.
If you are drawn to traditional martial arts discipline and practical striking, Striking Fundamentals offers another welcoming way to train. The class helps teens and adults develop balance, coordination, focus, and controlled striking skills through consistent practice.
Foundations meets Tuesday and Thursday and is $135/month per month. Striking Fundamentals meets Monday and Wednesday and is $100/month per month. Both beginner paths begin with the same free first week.

Come in, try class, then decide.
A first visit should answer the questions you actually have. Is the class welcoming? Can I keep up? Will my child feel comfortable? Do the instructors explain things clearly? A free first week gives you more than a quick tour. It gives you time to experience the space, meet the people, and see how training fits into your routine.
Wear comfortable clothes that let you move. For Jiu-Jitsu, Bushin can provide a gi for your first visit. Arrive with questions about the program, schedule, or what to expect. There is no pressure to decide immediately. The goal is to help you make an informed choice about the kind of training environment you want.
Bushin is located at 6024 Brook Road in Richmond, with easy access and parking. You can also meet the instructors, review the current membership options, or contact Bushin if you would like help choosing a program before you visit.
A steady place to train
Build confidence that carries beyond class.
Martial arts training is most useful when it becomes a habit you can return to. A child learns that effort and respect matter. A teen discovers a constructive challenge. An adult finds time to move, focus, and develop a new skill. Over time, the techniques are important, but so are the confidence, discipline, and community that grow through consistent practice.
Bushin keeps that process grounded. Classes are structured, instructors are experienced, and beginners have room to learn without being judged for where they start. That is what makes a first class feel approachable and gives students a reason to keep coming back.
